Want to progress as a painter? There are no secrets…only a good foundation of skills and habits.

In this three-day workshop with Michael Downs you will learn these “tools” just like masters such as Sargent, Rembrandt, and Monet. Working from life, you will start with proper drawing form, move into a tonal approach, and finish with colour.

Traditional skills and habits will be taught throughout and will set you on the path to mastering painting, no matter what you choose to paint!

Painting Live-Model Portraits

with Michael Downs

Join artist Michael Downs for this one-day workshop painting portraits of live, studio models!

Using a traditional grisaille method and a brush, Michael will show you how to render form efficiently and immediately. This approach uses passive and active relationships to build your skill and confidence. Then, we will move on to a traditional impressionist method and palette knife to create form loosely and dynamically. This approach uses vibrant colour relationships to build your visual acuity for colour.

Put your colours to the test with this vibrant night scene! In this four-day class with artist Brittney Tough you will learn how to exaggerate colour to create light and shadows. Students will learn about colour theory and how it is applied in a painting, and we will specifically discuss those tricky greens and yellows!

Through step-by-step demonstrations, participants will learn how to apply watercolours using many techniques and processes. Brittney will also provide one-on-one guidance throughout the process.
