DANIEL SMITH Watercolour Ground opens up a world of possibilities by allowing you to paint with watercolours on virtually any surface—wood, metal, ceramic, plastic, canvas, plaster, glass, stone, and more. This archival-quality ground creates a soft, lightly textured finish reminiscent of cold press watercolour paper, making it ideal for those who want to preserve the medium’s signature transparency, clarity, and luminosity. It’s also a practical solution for adding texture or covering flaws in your work. Available in six versatile shades—Titanium White, Buff Titanium, Mars Black, Iridescent Gold, Pearlescent White, and Transparent—each offers unique creative effects.
Titanium White
provides a bright, clean base, perfect for applying watercolours over darker or coloured surfaces. It can also act as a “white out,” allowing you to cover and repaint unwanted areas. For best results, blend the ground with up to 10% water and apply with a soft brush to smooth the edges.
Buff Titanium
offers a warm, natural undertone that complements soft pastels, graphite, and other dry media beautifully.
Mars Black
delivers a dramatic foundation that makes Luminescent Watercolours stand out while offering an unexpected but striking backdrop for traditional pigments.
Iridescent Gold
is a semi-transparent ground with a radiant shimmer. The original surface will subtly show through, but you can build up a richer finish with two to three thin coats. It’s excellent for layering glazes or adding gold highlights.
Pearlescent White
shares the same semi-transparent quality, offering a soft sheen that enhances transparent or semi-transparent watercolours layered on top. Multiple coats increase the pearlescent effect, ideal for accenting specific areas.
Transparent
ground allows the underlying surface—like wood grain or decorative paper—to remain visible, giving you the best of both worlds: the character of your substrate and the brilliance of watercolour.
