Exploring Brusho: The Magic of Powdered Watercolour
We’re always excited to share materials that inspire creative play, and Brusho is one of those products that never fails to delight. Brusho powdered watercolours are unlike any other paint in your toolkit. It is vivid, versatile, and full of surprises.
In the video above, we explore how this unique medium works and demonstrate a few simple techniques to get you started.
What Makes Brusho Special
Brusho is a highly pigmented watercolour that comes in powder form. Each small jar holds an intense, concentrated colour that can be used in several ways. Because the powder reacts instantly with water, you can achieve anything from subtle washes to explosive bursts of colour.
To make the jars easier to control, we like to punch a small hole in the lid using a thumbtack. This turns the container into a convenient shaker, letting us sprinkle just the right amount of powder without removing the lid entirely.
Different Ways to Use Brusho
There’s no single way to paint with Brusho and that’s part of its charm! Here are a few techniques we tried in the demo:
1. Mixing Brusho into Watercolour Paint
We can tap a bit of powder into a palette or small container, add a few drops of water, and stir. Instantly, the pigment dissolves into a rich watercolour paint ready for brushing onto paper. For example, a small amount of Scarlet Brusho mixed with water creates a vibrant red wash.
2. Sprinkling onto a Wet Surface
Another exciting method is to wet the paper first and then sprinkle the powder directly onto the damp area. The pigment blooms and spreads across the surface, creating textured, organic effects perfect for backgrounds or abstract work.
3. Sprinkling First, Then Adding Water
You can also reverse the order: sprinkle the Brusho on dry paper, then spritz it with water. This gives you more control over how the colours activate and blend, and the results can range from soft gradients to dramatic splashes of colour.
Discovering Hidden Colours
One of the most fascinating things about Brusho is how complex its pigments can be. For instance, when we used black Brusho, we discovered that it isn’t made from a single pigment. It breaks into beautiful hints of cyan, orange, and other hues once it hits water. Whether you mix it into a wash or sprinkle it dry, the resulting texture and colour play are mesmerizing.
