Schmincke HORADAM® AQUARELL watercolours are crafted to the highest professional standards, offering exceptional brilliance, purity, and versatility. Composed of finely ground pigments, gum arabic binder, and a touch of wetting agent, these premium watercolours are fully water-soluble—even after drying—allowing for reactivation and extended creative flexibility.
With 139 colours in the range, including 92 single-pigment shades, artists can achieve extraordinarily vivid mixes with minimal risk of muddiness. Special pigments such as perylenes, quinacridones, and transparent iron oxides expand the creative possibilities, while 22 granulating colours (indicated by a “G” in the colour chart) provide unique texture effects.
Suitable for beginners and professionals alike, Schmincke watercolours support a full range of techniques, from traditional wet-on-wet and glazing to modern mixed media approaches. Their compatibility with various watercolour mediums opens the door to even more creative experimentation on different surfaces. Schmincke also offers fixatives to protect finished works while preserving colour brilliance and intensity.
Whether working with a compact 12-colour set or building a custom palette, artists benefit from the brand’s commitment to pigment purity and consistency. For best results, pair with professional-quality brushes and paper—essential tools for achieving optimal transparency, lightfastness, and lasting vibrancy.
Supergranulating Colours – HORADAM® AQUARELL watercolours feature a unique property where the combination of at least two granulating HORADAM® pigments amplifies the granulation effect to create what is known as “supergranulation.” These colours are formulated by blending pigments from different colour families, producing not only intensified granulation but also subtle colour shifts. For example, Deep Sea Indigo (14 952) combines violet and green pigments, while Glacier Brown (14 965) blends brown and green pigments. The natural textured effect varies depending on the paper’s texture and the amount of water used, with rougher papers enhancing the granulation effect.
The collection includes 40 supergranulating colours, organized into eight thematic series of five colours each: Deep Sea, Glacier, Galaxy, Forest, Tundra, Volcano, Shire, and Desert. These colours come in both half pans and 15 ml tubes, and all have excellent lightfastness ratings of four or five stars. The pigments used are exclusively those already featured in the HORADAM® range, ensuring consistency and quality. Most supergranulating colours are semi-transparent to semi-opaque in coverage.
Supergranulating colours can be used alone or combined seamlessly with the full range of 139 HORADAM® AQUARELL watercolours, giving artists a rich palette of textured effects and colour variations to explore.
Schmincke’s Aqua Drop is a liquid, pigment-based watercolour that is highly lightfast, water-soluble, and ready to use straight from the bottle. Each colour is water-thinnable for versatile application. The range includes 24 cadmium-free, transparent colours plus one opaque white, all offered in convenient 30 ml plastic pipette bottles with a mixing ball for easy shaking. With a well-balanced palette featuring 13 single-pigment shades, all colours are grouped into one price category and carry the highest lightfastness ratings, boasting 4 or 5 stars.
Ideal for watercolour painting, urban sketching, calligraphy, hand lettering, and airbrushing (from 0.15 mm), Aqua Drop colours include standout shades such as jade green, amethyst violet, and amber. These liquid watercolours are fully compatible with all watercolour ranges, including HORADAM®. The additional opaque white can be used on its own or mixed with Aqua Drop colours to lighten tones, and it applies smoothly with either a brush or nib.
Liquid Frisket
is a masking fluid designed to protect specific areas on watercolour paper, smooth drawing board, photographs, or film that you want to keep white. It can be applied with a writing pen, cotton swab, or wooden stick and dries clear.
Liquid Frisket – Coloured
comes tinted blue for easier visibility during application and is used undiluted with the same tools as above.
Aqua Gloss
is a medium for watercolours that increases gloss and brilliance while slowing drying time. It remains water-soluble after drying and can be mixed with watercolours or applied on its own.
Aqua Fix
enhances the water resistance of watercolours, preventing the colours from dissolving when layering and allowing for more transparent effects. Use Aqua Fix as a substitute for water in your painting process, and be sure to clean brushes and palettes thoroughly with water and soap after use.
Aqua Pasto
is a watercolour medium that retards drying, reduces colour flow, and boosts gloss. It is suitable for moderate spatula techniques but beware that applying layers that are too thick may cause cracking. Like Aqua Gloss, it remains water-soluble after drying and can be mixed with watercolours or applied pure.
Fine Aqua Modelling Paste
creates white, relief-like, fine textured grounds on surfaces such as heavy paper (over 350 g/m²), cardboard, or wood. Apply it with a spatula, and once dried, it forms a water-resistant film that can be overpainted with watercolours. It can also be tinted using tube watercolours or acrylic paint.
Course Aqua Modelling Paste
works similarly to the fine version but produces a coarser, more textured relief on the surface. It is also applied with a spatula, dries to a water-resistant film, and can be overpainted or tinted like the fine paste.
Aqua Watercolour Ground, Fine
is a white, light-resistant, and non-ageing primer ideal for preparing greaseless surfaces such as linen canvas, cardboard, or wood for watercolour painting. It dries to an elastic, matte, and even film. The ground is ready to use and should be applied in a minimum of three layers; if diluted with water (up to 10%), additional layers are necessary.
Aqua Effect Spray
is a medium that creates spontaneous, interesting surface effects when sprayed onto still-wet watercolour paint from a distance of about 20 to 30 cm. To protect areas you want to keep unchanged, use masking beforehand. Note that this effect does not work well on highly absorbent papers such as those made from 100% rag or cotton.
