How to Use the Handwritmic Folded Pen

One of the most exciting things about calligraphy and mark-making is discovering tools that are extraordinary. The Folded Pen is one of those: unconventional, versatile, and a lot of fun to use!

What is a Folded Pen?

At its core, this pen is simply a piece of brass folded in half – hence the name Folded Pen. You may also have heard it called a cola pen, as you can DIY this tool from cut-up soda cans (be careful not to cut yourself though!).

There are many versions out there, but the ones we are using in this video is made by the Italian company Handwritmic.

Why We Love Them

  • Expressive line variation: From razor-thin hairlines to bold, sweeping strokes, the Folded Pen responds beautifully to changes in angle and pressure.
  • Versatility in use: Perfect for both experimental lettering and abstract mark making, this pen gives you a wide range of creative possibilities!
  • Playful unpredictability: On textured papers like Hahnemühle Ingres, the pen can splatter or “spit” ink, adding spontaneous character to your work.
  • Unique personality: No two strokes are ever exactly alike, making every piece fresh and full of surprises.
